Alto Horn Ensembles in Brass Bands

 Within church bands and other brass bands the family of horns is often extensive. The Alto Horn, sometimes but mistakenly also known as Eb tenor Horns, play in the key of Eb Together three of them form a  alto horn ensemble or choir , one of them playing solos, one also playing first horn harmonies and one 2nd horn harmonies. It is often also used in marching bands.

The Alto horn has 3 valves and and the sound is not as deep as French Horn.

 The Alto Horn uses a cup mouthpiece and is built with a medium sized bell, smaller than the lower sounding Tenor Horn in Bb  and then the  Baritone horn, the even lower sounding Euphonium, then the lower sounding Tuba and finally the lowest bass brass instrument , the Sousaphone.
