The cornet is a similar instrument to the trumpet - having a similar mouthpiece but shorter tubing as well as a smaller tubing bore. The cornet sound is not as strident as trumpet and warmer.
The cornet can play the exact same music as trumpet and is usually also a Bb instrument
it has a conical bore rather than a cylindrical bore and the more complex tubing leads to a little more resistance in blowing
many orchestral trumpeters still love to play on the older cornets with V shaped mouthpice cups for their distinctive relaxed mellow tonal qualities , but the modern round mouthpiece brings the cornet a little closer in sound but still darker and "mellower : than trumpet
