Choosing a Cello FAQ

QUESTIONS Weve had

If I go with the Palatino I would happily pay for the
proper setup and would want it sent to me in Durban.
yes sometime extra charges but in the of cello we wont put the pric eup - so  no extra charges

Q./
I am an adult beginner, but I have played violin in the past and I know how difficult it
is to make cheap instruments sound good... Are there any other alternatives in stock
(aside from those shown ? Perhaps slightly more expensive, but likely to have better
tone?
Q!./
is the palatino cello fullsize?
is it a good student start out cello?
does it come with a hard case?  ( comes with a 600 Denier Cordura Nylon Bag with Padding cello bag )
i know this is a difficult question but is the tone good? i do not want to buy something that is just going to disappoint me. do you think that i should rather spend more money and get a better cello or is this a good place to start?

My experience has been these instruments after setup with custom Jargar strings sound extremely good - much warmer -smoother  - the instrument becomes a totally different instruments as any make would .

No thats all we have - they are all similar in that price range - all made in china despite the european names but theres no reason to think because chinese they arre inferior - plse reclick links bottom of this page after opening it to read about cellos in this price bracket coming our of china

In the end a cello  -
improves in sound for 3 reasons
1) because of its age if it were solid top
3) what strings what setup bridge + other customisation went into it
4) for even a solid top to sell at better price ( even if aged )the above wont be sufficient - a luthier to price it in around the R7000+ bracket would need to do substantial more work like thinning some of the solid wood and so on
5) the player - you - your bowing action and control - all of which takes several years to develop

Chinese or other cello makers who claim to sell them at these prices with pre aged wood I would  regarded with skepticism but thats me :) it makes no financial sense

Also the quote on advanced setup is via charles du preez-a luthier in wellington
we dont add extra - he just invoices us seperately and we send you a copy of his invoice but you pay us. The fact that charles also plays the instrument over and over as he makes adjustments is an essential aspect of work that only a Luthier can do - as opposed to just a shop restring

SETUPS of the student Cellos we offer

After setup - the sound does improve with age, just as much as solid top would,  but - with good setup + strings ( advanced)  it sounds very beautiful  - much warmer - without a doubt like a totally different instrument.
however this can of course be done at any time later on too if your budget restricts

With even the free  basic setup we offer before delivery, cellos made in china now  still result in a pleasing sound, being on the whole very robustly made and with oluthiers in last 2 decased n chian imprving all the time.
