FAQ
I've played clarinet for a number of years, which I haven't found easy. Is the saxophone easier to play? I just want to play sax for my own enjoyment without too much sweat. I don't intend playing publicly or in a band.

hi  - im not a saxophone teacher or a clarinet teacher- im a flute teacher and have just dilly dallied on clar and sasx .but generally im not sure one would be easier than another . I think its more to do with how you approach ..what you learn and what [pace you push yourself.. if ones expectations are minimal it helps a lot

i wrote this article years back

to me i like the sax because of the sound ..strong warm etc....so even playing long notes excercises for beginners i find enjoyable:)

but read others opinion below

I presume that this instrument comes with a case and cleaning accessories?
comes in canvas covered  hard foam case ( zip ) with a wire brush cleaner for main body and cloth and cork grease - could supply any others you specially wanted..
What about reeds? How much would a few beginner's strength reeds cost?
Royal - French Filed Cut Rico Royal reeds have a more traditional French filed cut for increased response, especially in the low register, adding clarity to the tone and making soft attacks easier. Available for the full range of saxophone and clarinet voices and conveniently packaged in boxes of ten reeds.  are now going for R60 a reed ..pretty expensive unforunately but if you buy sax will give up to 5 @ R40 each (strength 2 is most teachers choice for students which is what we have )
I know that this is(Chinese/ Asian?) - how would you rate it as far as quality is concerned? I don't want to have to fork out regularly for repairs.
we have had hardly any come back on 1 years guarantee, but saxes do give problems now and then of course  , though usually minor ( cork pads come off .. a spring..etc..even yamaha, especially when not serviced regularly (advised once every 2 years if playing about 2-3 hour week) bu7t the repairer we have used for all brands has told us actually chinese saxes only give very minor and very intermittent - i think a lot of americans who can afford "big brands jupiter and yamaha or some suppliers carrying stock of them in SA ..like to bad mouth chinese saxes on the net almost to justify what they pay frankly maybe the very lower register is harder to get in perfect tune but the sax is hard to get in tune anyone  but if one is concerned about finer point s one shouold be spending a lot more. approx  R13000 upwards on something like jupiter  or trevor james

TREVOR JAMES ARTEMIS 3757A1 (Gold Lacquer) R 14,850.00

Some repairers have told us saxophones dont need special setups and that pads play themselves in . other prefer to set the pads very finely and adjust one or 2 springs but thats quite costly , around R450 i think noone has had problems with the saxophones over 6-7 years now including teachers and we have not had them had all setup specially..but it probably does makes a slight difference to the feel.., so that can be done for you if you like at extra cost..

OPTION B Jupiter alto saxophone. Most well known brand worldwide of these three.
machining of rods + shafts and overall mechanism better ..known to last a life time ( witb annual or every 2 year services depending on how hard they are played
Rounder smoother sound than the above 2 - easily good enough to go to matric music and some students in university still play them
