GENERAL METHODOLOGY FOR MUSIC LESSONS

  • SHEET MUSIC A scanner is used to to provide you copies of sheet music as my supplying PC printed copies.
  • ARRANGEMENTS I have many notated arrangements esp for beginners that I write on PC of popular contemporary songs from Outkast to Kylie and Eric Clapton as well as classical and beginners Jazz and rock solos for music lessons. But you will know what you enjoy and youll tell me !

I choose songs for music lessons carefully according to your level of playing but encourage learning songs even from the beginning as I believe that its a lot more inspiring playing something you already know the sound of . I have arranged many songs for all instruments over the years in formats more accessible to

beginners than often found. One of them being using these easy to read notes whilst you are still learning these notes in music lessons

  • Guitarists are in addition encouraged to learn TAB (click to see an excellent article here)

  • ACCOMPANIMENTS for Guitar Flute and Keyboard I provide band and orchestral backings to play with at home on floppy disk, in midi format. Or if youre learning the piano a recording of the piece youre learning in either classical or the contemporary style of youre choice. Which means they can be played from your windows media player if you have pc speakers to supplemet your lessons at the studio.

  • USING SEQUENCING SOFTWARE Often during the lesson a "continual playing" approach to lessons is used, using sequencer software to loop and repeat each part of the piece over speakers for students to play with, also using the sheet music in front of them, ensurng that they both hear how what theyd be playing at all times and repeat it each short phrase about 3 times before moving on, Students find this fun in music lessons and it builds their confidance. Rather feeling that at home you will have to "untangle and decipher" a whole lot of instructions on how to read the music which you were given in your music lesson.
  • STYLES OF MUSIC Individual lessons focus on solo repertoire styles of students choice (Classical repertoire, Rock, Jazz or Popular Songs) as well as advancing fingering, rhythmic and sight reading skills to a high degree of competence.
  • CHOOSING THE RIGHT PIECE AT THE RIGHT TIME A big part of learning the an instrument is all about playing the RIGHT piece at the right TIME ! That means the difference between one beginners piece and another can be enormous. One will leave you feeling compfortable and slightly challenged but confidant goling away from the lesson. If the teacher chose the right piece, even before the end of the lesson you will feel relaxed and confidant and have played much of the piece in the lesson already . If not well Ive already said where the problem might lie! In other words a teacher needs to be continually assesing your fingering, reading, rhythmic and other skills and ensure that the gap between one piece and the next wont leave you feeling overwhelmed
  • SOFTWARE I also supply you with free software to learn to read and encourage you to spend just 5 minutes a day on it . Times have changed for those that change with them and learning to read music need NOT be the nightmare of dry theory excercises it used to be with digital help .In fact its really rewarding this way and fun!

PIANO LESSONS

Please ensure youve read the General Methodology above too as most of how the music lessons work is written about there.

The aspects of learning music which take up the most time in piano playing are :

  • FINGERING Correct easiest choices from all the complex possibilities of fingering . Although all the music you play will have fingering marked in partly by me or if fomr a book not an arrnangement of mine some of it in the sheet music, until you understand WHY those fingers were chosen youll always be a slave to the sheet music indications and learning will be slower on the piano . So we will analyse a little as well and show you how to become your own sheet music editor! and make correct easy piano fingering choices !
  • LEFT HAND ACCOMPANIMENT STYLE ALL piano music whether contemporary, classical, written or just made up in the left hand with patterns comes donw to seeing that the left hand represents GROUPS of notes not notes in isioation, and that there are 7 basic groups only , one of which is operating at a given time in the piano music youre playing. So we focus on understanding those 7 chord groups for piano whether youre playing classical or pop songs or jazz. In a few months youll even start feeling confidant that way of also making your own piano music up !
  • SONGS AND PIECES for Piano . Youre coming to lessons to learn what YOU like , the piano pieces you like, and I understand that . So as far possible and especially as time goes on Ill do everything I can to find piano arrnangment of your favourietes and make them myself as well of the pieces youd like to learn. I will also recommend and give you other piano pieces to get you to that point where you can play them, especially in the beginning of yure piano playing .
  • GENERAL PIANO

Learning the piano involves both memory skills and reading skills as well a much underrated skill in the realm of pianists , understanding chords.

It depends on which approach you want. Learning classical or learning contemporary music.

Classical involves highly developed reading skills and finegering skills but yes memory and chord knowledge is also a BIG part of it.

Contemporary music involves the same too but with a little less emphasis and some more empahsis on understanding how to create left hand "patterns" which means understanding the basic chords too.

Yet how many methods including the "well known exam syllabuses" forgot to intergrate one essential thing that Mozart, Beethoven and any contemporary band knows moment to moment when they were or are playing music !

Which is that the complex range of notes ( 88 of them on the piano ) simply fit into a few relatively simple groups of 7 3 note chords, whether it be a classical or contemporary piece

That might sound very complicated to a beginner but actaully it simply means that I dont "seperate" music into "theory" "fingering " "chords" etc , as the great composers and great bands and songwriters always have known.

This is what makes music interesting ! Seeing how all the aspects fit together in every second there is sound ! UNDERSTANDING what one is learning to play, instead of just parrot like reading a series of dots ! Seeing how the chords, the dots in the 5 lines, the fingers you need to use are all really just at any one time one of the same simple 7 groups of chords played in different ways.

  • GUITAR LESSONS

Please ensure youve read the General Methodology above too as most of how the music lessons work is written about there.

  • READING There are two ways to "read " music on the guitar. TAB is the most common for those not playing classical guitar (click to see an excellent article on TAB here) However reading only TAB has serious disadvantages . I recommend learning boith ways of reading . TAB AND the 5 line staves. Tab cant represent rhythmic values . Unfortunately only classical qualified teachers teach real reading, other guitar teaches with a qualification giving the excuse that its not neccessary and sadly will mislead you that the world is at your feet with TAB . Not true. So if you know the piece already and have no desire to play it with other people ( in time to the beats ) TAB is fine but where youd like a better grounding its advisable as I said in the general methodology above , to have a little fun learning to read standard notes with software and other help which I will give you.

  • CHORDS Chords are the groups of notes as explained in the general methodology, that pervade each melody (melodies use the same notes as chords but play then seperately and mix them up a little more with other chord notes at times too ) Chords arent easy to learn so its fun to play along when learning to change form one chord position to another with a backtrack which has the chords removed so you can play them

  • CLASSICAL The days when having to play even classical alone are really gone if your teacher uses backings of classical music for you to play along with on your win media player. I give pieces like pachelbels canon , the moonlight sonata and others and write specially easy parts for beginners to play with them
  • ROCK Playing your own solos is possible within some time but at first I provide you with TAB and written STaff 5 line solos with rock and blues backings . We explore simple 5 note rock scales ( penatonic) playing them in different ryhthms with backing tracks until youre able to create your own solos .
  • INSTRUMENTAL GUITAR SONG VERSIONS It doesnt take too long before youll be picking song melodies like Tears in heaven with a plectrum quite easily and playing time with back tracks too. There are many simlpe songs to learn in the beginning.

  • KEYBOARD LESSONS
  • Please see piano above as the same applies to keyboard lessons but theres also a little of the technical side of learning the keyboard controls.
  • In addition though the keyboard is easier to learn at first in that the left hand is supplemented for beginners with the auto accompaniments in ROCK LATIN and a good 100 styles. The variety of using the fantastic string , synthesiser and other ( minimum 100 sounds these days on keyboards) also makes for a lot of variety and interest. See our site www.ezmusic4u.com which has keyboard music and other information.

  • FLUTE LESSONS
  • All the info above in General Methodology also applies to flute lessons.
  • The flute is all about breath control and embouchure ( lip control) As one masters these aspects the fingering and reading are much simpler than either guitar piano or keyboard for one reason. The flute oly neds to read ONE line of music, the treble clef ( high notes )
  • This can take a few months and then suddenly music is easy to read and starts to flow easily. So at first long note practice is the only way to learn to control the flute sound but I've made it a lot more fun by making backings in all sorts of styles (Rock, Classical Jazz , Pop) to play along with whilst one is learning and take home too.
  • There are beautiful classical studies for the flute but also many arrangments of pop and jazz tunes tunes ot play with backings too !
